Lily the Pink

the Scaffold

Submitted by: pollyanna

In 1969 the Christmas hit was "Lily the Pink" by the Scaffold. This was a song that my gran loved perhaps because her surname was Pinckston and she had a sister called Lily. She would sing along with gusto and my young four year old would join in. The words in every verse are very catchy and funny and he especially loved saying the words "..medicinal compound most efficacious in every case" in every chorus.

He enjoy the sound of it even though he didn't know what it meant.

Actually this song was a modification by the Scaffold from an older folk song called "The Ballad of Lydia Pinkham". She was a real person who sold 'medicines' that she had concocted - not always from safe ingredients. it may be that my gran knew the song from an earlier time.
