I just called to say I Love You

Stevie Wonder

Submitted by: pollyanna

I used to go to the local village hall for afternoon tea dances twice a month. At one of these a friend brought along his next-door neighbour. This newcomer and I found we had a lot in common and soon became close friends. It was lovely for me to have a dance partner but we soon found that we had lots of other interests in common.

We both enjoyed visiting stately homes and the beautiful gardens that are open to the public. before long we were sharing holidays and driving all over this fantastic country we live in. When we had evenings at home we liked the Telegraph cryptic crossword (although it took us ages) and watching TV. We had a similar sense of humour and loved the sitcoms.

Most of all though we loved the ballroom and latin dancing that had brought us together and went to dances several times a week. Then unfortunately he suffered several heart attacks. After a triple bypass operation he returned to quite good health and we were able to continue as before. However after a few years he had a relapse and sadly he died in 2006 after a year of very distressing illness.

When we were dancing our favourite dance was the rumba and this Stevie Wonder song was just our 'Number One' to dance to.

Now that my partner is no longer here I always feel sad when I hear it, although I still think it is a most beautiful song. But how I wish I could ring him and say "I just called to say I love you"
