Blue Monday

New Order

Submitted by: Mr Blue

Our sixth form common room was a tip but it was our tip and hiding in the corner was a snotty little radiogram. Yep a radiogram, made of wood like your granny used to have. The radio bit had hardly any reception and the one speaker was tiny. I mean lets face they weren’t going to give us the 1983 equivalent of a Bose system in a comprehensive common room were they? Then one lunchtime the world changed forever. The trendy guy, always the first to know the cool tunes (no it wasn’t me) walked in with a bag from the local record store and walked straight up to the record player. I can remember him striding across the room as if he had a purpose. He pulled the computer disc sleeve from the bag and placed the 12 inch into the player, before turning the volume up to eleven. And then it happened.
Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom ba-da-ba-da-da-da-da, boom, boom, boom, boom.
And everyone and I mean everyone turned as one to look at this amazing noise coming out of this tiny speaker in the corner. Like it was yesterday, all of us staring at this tiny record player for seven minutes, twenty nine seconds. And all conversations stopped; there was nothing but this noise. It really was something new, something totally different, something that sort of changed the world.
But that moment, that split second when the needle dropped, didn’t change my life forever but it came pretty damn close. It was certainly etched into my brain.

P.S. The video below is for the slightly funky re-released version. The videos available for the original are unwatchable!
