Two Little Boys

Rolf Harris

Submitted by: pollyanna

The year that this was the Christmas hit I had my granma living with me. Every time she heard it she got quite weepy. She told me that this was not a new song but had become very popular around the time of the first World War and it became associated with that. So when she heard it she thought of the friends and relatives that she had lost in the fighting. As commercial radio was not around till 1926, it is puzzling to know how music became universally known and popular. apparently the Music Hall popularised this song in England from 1902 onwards but it can be traced back to the American Civil War. Buying songsheets of popular songs then was possibly the same as downloading a song is nowadays and a lot of people played the piano and folk loved 'singalongs'.
Nowadays this song seems to be classified as a 'Christmas Song' and is trotted out every year. I am not sure why. Anyway whenever I hear it I think fondly of my gran.
