Everyone will think I’m making this one up. But I swear to god its true and I can remember it like it was yesterday. I’d split up with this girl Tina. She was my first serious girlfriend and you always split up with them. & yes she dumped me and yes I was incredibly stupid and immature and did some very silly things to hurt her, all of which failed miserably. Anyway this is about the very last time I saw her. It was 1984 and we were in the bar of the local Sports Centre, having a couple of beers after a workout when she walks over to us. Which is odd in itself as our break up as mentioned above was not pretty and it was about a year previously. Anyway she walks over and sits down, talks vaguely about the friends from work she’s with and seems basically slightly weird & distracted. Then it came out.
“Of course I’m engaged now,”
She’d been playing with a necklace all the time she’d been talking and I hadn’t noticed that there was a ring on it. It was odd. It was like she already regretted it and I was expecting me to say it was ok and she was doing the right thing. She seemed to be almost asking for my approval. Her friends waved at her to come on and she turned to leave. I think she then said,
“Well you know me, always rushing into things,” then a smile, goodbye and that was the last time I saw her. Her walking out to a song about the remains of feelings. If you wrote it in a movie, no one would believe you.
She did get married but in 2006.
