In '83 I was lucky enough to be working for a multinational that sent me for a while to the South of France.
To my great surprise, the attractive hotel receptionist agreed to come out with me on my day off. She was from Luxembourg and didn't speak any English - and my French was awful. So we took both sets of phrase books and dictionaries and just set off into the winter sunshine.
One of my fondest memories of the trip is of driving along the coastal highway from Cannes toward Monte Carlo, with its twists and turns, tunnels and spectacular sea views, laughing and singing with a virtual stranger as this played over and over on the stereo.
