OK - So let's set the scene.
Saturday morning. It was the first time that the members of the band had rehearsed. The rehearsal was taking place at Phil's house and the band members started arriving, lugging their kit in through the kitchen and into the lounge/dining room where they were going to set up their equipment.
I ought to mention at this point that neither Phil nor I had ever met any of these guys before so everyone was on their best behaviour. Including Hamish, my golden retriever.
Once everything was as in place as it was going to get and many cups of coffee had been drunk and bacon sarnies consumed. It was decided that they ought to start with something that they all knew fairly well.
Bohemian Like You by the Dandy Warhols seemed to fit the bill. So the band members assumed their positions.
Drums - check, Bass(Phil)- check, Rhythm Guitar - check, Lead Guitar & Vocals - check.
Hamish & I took our place on the sofa at the far end of the room. The guys were a little wary of a dog being present, probably thinking that he'd freak when the noise started and that there'd be cables and mic stands everywhere. No so. Hamish had always been a music fan and was, therefore, quite chilled.
Anyway. Tony, the drummer, counted everyone in and started with the intro. At the point where the rest of the band should've come in the entire room (except the drummer who was concentrating on getting everyone in on his count) collapsed in fits of laughter.
Unbeknown to Tony the drummer, Hamish had been watching every movement of the drumsticks and had that look on his face (that only a dog can do) as if to say "Are you going to throw that stick or what?"
Hamish, I'm sad to say, is no longer with us.
But the memory of that morning still is and Phil & I are reminded of it every time we hear that song.
